Eight Compromises over Slavery and Taxes 

Meaningful detail content-60%- Did you provide the who, when, where, why in detail that a reader or grader understands what was happening and why it was happening? The danger to some is that they just put date after date that the flow of the story is lost. You need to read what you have written and ask yourself is it interesting. If not, rewrite it. There is a great gap between the writing ability of the students in this class. I am not an English teacher who feels that my job is to teach you to write, but I am a history teacher who expects students to work on communicating that they understand the assignment and give college-level responses to it.

Grammar-5%- Did you run spell check? Did you read what you wrote? It has been literally 50 years since I first graded college tests/papers. Over that time period I have watched comma rules change, spelling change, and witnessed people edit what others have written to the point that I  have returned to my basic principle- did you answer the question? Just read what you write, have others read it, do not call George Washington George and answer the question. I count off for the assumed familiarity of calling a historical figure by their first name. My professors flunked a paper over it. Do not do it! Copy each of the 8 Compromises clearly so it is easy to follow. Use numbers to list each one. You submit only one document as an attachment. You do not copy and paste the material to the narrative box. Put “here you go” there. Always save your work to your computer in case something happens. Never email me your work unless I tell you to.

1. The Constitution (1788-1789)

 Material on the event (do this on each one) Only discuss the Compromise over how slaves should be counted as far as the Census.

It determines both representation and as intended at the time how much tax each state would pay to the National Government

2. Fugitive Slave Act (1793)

3. Missouri Compromise (1820)

4. Second Missouri Compromise (1821)

5. Gag Rule in Congress (1831-1844)

6. Compromise of 1850

7. Kansas- Nebraska Act (1854)

8. Crittenden Compromise (1860)

Your assignment is to discuss each one of the 8 in greater detail than he did. You must cite the above source as one of your sources. Your paper may well be improved by including relevant pictures. I am particularly looking for discussion on the economic issues involved. The issue behind the moral issue of slavery was the economic effect of tariffs. [ High tariffs were good for the manufacturing interest of the North and bad for the agrarian interest of the South because of reciprocal tariffs]. Your text is helpful. To some this may look like a hard assignment. Others will see it as an opportunity to learn and demonstrate their ability to understand our past. 

You should bold and number each one. Do not just do an essay where all the information runs together.
