Poetry is a very compact form of communication that packs a lot of information into a text. Because text is everywhere, so too is poetry—from the poems that we read in books or that we [illegally] download from various sources to the advertising that assaults us on a daily basis. By analyzing text as poetry, we may see more of the subtle meaning/implications of events in our lives.

Task: Choose a text (i.e., a poem, a song, an advertisement, etc., and preferably one not discussed in class) and specifically explain how it may be treated as a poem. Although you will likely need to provide a brief analysis of the text and explain “what the poem means”, the focus of the essay is on explaining how the text is a poem rather than providing a length analysis of the poem’s meaning.
