Diagnostic Assignment: Letter of Introduction

The purpose of this assignment is twofold. First, it helps your instructor get to know you and better understand your needs in this class. Second, it provides your instructor an opportunity to give you some early feedback on areas of your writing that might need improvement right away.

In your letter, answer as many of the following questions as you can.  Please write your name in full at the top of the page. Use paragraph form, not point form. The letter is for completion marks only and will count towards your short writing, research activities, and quizzes grade.

1. What name do you prefer to be called? What pronouns do you prefer to use to refer to

yourself? (e.g. he/him/his? she/her/hers? they/them/their? other?)

2. What program are you in? What semester or year are you in?
3. What is your background in writing/English? Please let me know if a) you have never

written an essay before or b) you have never used quotations before in your writing.

4. In what situations are you presently required to write? What kind of writing are you

doing?

5. Why are you taking this class now? In what ways do you think this course will help you

achieve your goals?

6. What would you like to improve about your writing?
7. What do you enjoy about writing? What do you dislike about writing?
8. What kinds of things do you enjoy reading?
9.    What kinds of things make a good classroom experience for you? What kinds of things

do you value in the courses you take? Be as specific as possible.

10. What has a teacher or instructor done in the past that has helped you learn?
11. If you have taken an online course in the past, what things worked well for you and

helped you learn, and what things didn’t work so well?

12.   Do you have a hobby or sport that you enjoy? If so, what is it?
13. Do you have other responsibilities that will require your time and attention this semester?
14. Do you have a smartphone?
15. Do you have your own computer and printer? Do you have to borrow or share these?

Explain.

16. Do you have internet access at home?
17. Do you have any worries or fears about this course or the semester in general? What

might you be able to do to alleviate those worries or fears?

18. Is there anything else you want me to know about you that would help me support you

this semester? If so, explain.

In a separate paragraph, please also answer one of the following questions:

1. Have you had an educational experience that changed your path somehow—either for

good bad?  Describe/explain.
