Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of the Media Literacy Assessment Paper is for you to reflect on your current knowledge level about various media, industries, and effects. You will do this in the context of a self report.

Media Literacy

Potter (2004) defines media literacy as the process by which an individual critically analyzes and evaluates produced media messages. To become media literate, one must have or develop knowledge about media structures and messages as well as their effects. This includes but is not limited to: Media Content (Print/Internet/Television/Radio), Media Industries and Media Effects.

Assignment Guidelines

You will work independently to write a 3 page paper, complete with introduction and conclusion. You will answer divide your paper across three areas:

1. Media Content (~1page)
   1. Assess the overall degree to which you are currently knowledgeable about

      each type of content listed below using a scale of Not at all to Extremely Knowledgeable.

      i. Radio/Podasts (e.g., broadcast/serials)

      2. Print (e.g., News/Magazines/Books)
      3. Television (e.g., Broadcast or online originals)
      4. Internet (e.g., Social Media, Twitter, etc)
   2. Briefly describe the most important topics you are aware of in each type of content listed below.

Paper Formatting: Your paper should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins. Acceptable fonts for this assignment are: Times, Times New Roman, or Garamond. Include a cover page with your paper title, name, section, instructor’s name, and the date. The cover page is not included in the page count.
