Please create a post in this forum, and write 3-5 paragraphs (generally, but not exclusively, about 3-5 sentences each) describing what the U.S./Mexico border has meant in your particular life.

This may sound like a vague prompt, but we want to keep in mind that the border is both something imagined and something very real. In other words, the border is not a natural geographic division between two countries — or one country and the rest of the world. The border was brought into being relatively recently through violent conquest, and is regulated by different kinds of violence, most prominently the threat of incarceration and deportation. And the border is also a vibrant site of cultural and economic exchange, of people improvising within state-imposed barriers.

So, in this discussion forum, I’m just asking you to take some time and consider how the border has affected your lives, whether it’s the thought of the border, or the everyday reality of the border. This can include the experiences of those close to you, as well. Looking forward to hearing from each of you.
