Gender in Toy Commercials Reflection

In this assignment, you will analyze ideas about gender roles in our society by examining how children’s toy commercials portray proper gender roles. You need to watch at least one video from List 1 and one video from List 2 and answer the following questions, using specific examples from the commercials you watched:

• What patterns emerge in how boys and girls are supposed to act? Analyze in relation to the week’s concepts and material.
• What patterns emerge in what boys and girls are supposed to desire? Analyze in relation to the week’s concepts and material.
• Beyond toy commercials, what are some other ways that children are taught about our culturally specific ideas about gender roles?
• What can analyzing toy commercials tell us about the enculturation of gender roles in our society?

*While this paper is about gender, and you do not need to address this in your paper, I encourage you to notice the racial makeup of the commercial actors and consider how this relates to the Peggy McIntosh’s idea of the ‘invisible knapsack.’
