essay will have two topics—(1) a summary of the article “The Brutal Truth You Must Accept to Write Well, According to Jeff Bezos,” by Jessica Stillman, and (2) your response to Stillman’s thesis and/or another point from her essay. NOTE: If you do respond to a different point than her thesis (claim), it has to be directly connected to the quote in your hook.
essay must be directed toward a college English professor. Your purpose is two-fold:
a. To prove that you understand Stillman’s thesis and subpoints
b. To help understand your response to her essay. essay must include two types of information:
a. A short quote from + a brief summary of the thesis and subpoints of Stillman’s article,
and
b. Your own life experiences as a writer to explain and provide examples for your
response. essay must be in basic essay structure as defined in Project 1 as well as meet the requirements below:
a. Overall format: Do not write in MLA format. Instead, do the following.
i. Use the same format as on the PDF of Stillman’s article: (a) Single space within paragraphs and double space between them, (b) do not indent paragraphs, (c)
create at least one heading in the body (one heading per subpoint), and (d) use
1” margins.
ii. Present the title of your essay + your name at the top left of the page (as on
Stillman’s article).
iii. Use attribution tags (not in-text citation or a works cited page) to introduce and
clarify source information, as Stillman does.
b. Essay structure: Your essay must contain the following.
i. For the intro, use a short quote from Stillman’s article as your hook. Then summarize Stillman’s thesis and 2 subpoints as the background information. Then present your response to the overall point and/or the point in your hook (i.e., the passage you quoted as your hook). NOTE: Your intro will probably be longer than one paragraph. Stillman’s is 3 paragraphs.
ii. For the body, explain your response and give at least one example.
iii. For the conclusion, summarize the main points of your essay, and end with food
for thought for me, your English professor, about the topic.
