Choose one of the following experiences to pursue. Fully describe your experience then evaluate it based on what you have learned from the readings about gender development. Post your 500-word reflection on Blackboard.

a.)   New Baby Cards: Go to the card section of any store. Look at the new baby cards (feel free to take pictures of them). What are the differences between new baby boy and new baby girl cards. Are there any gender-neutral cards? Evaluate these cards for their diversity – does anyone seem to be “left out” of these cards? How satisfied are you with the selection of cards available? Would you buy any of these?

b.)   Toy Store/Happy Meal: Go to a toy store. Is the store “gendered” in any way? How do you know this? Are there toys aimed at boys? Are there toys aimed at girls? What are the gender-neutral toys? Feel free to ask store employees about this. What if you have a child who wants a toy that defies gender expectations? Describe your experience. (You could also do this focused on toys included in “Happy Meals” at fast food restaurants)

c.)   Fairy Tales and Animated Stories: Watch a movie or read a story that is aimed at children. It could be a classic fairy tale or a Disney movie. How are the characters portrayed? Cite specific scenes from your source that is related to gender socialization. What are the messages being sent to girls about gender expectations. What about boys? Evaluate these stories for their diversity – does anyone seem to be “left out” of these stories? How satisfied are you with the selection of stories/movies available?
