(Scenario 1: You are a social worker at a shelter for runaways, assessing an unmarried, pregnant 15-year-old who has been living on the streets. She is in her seventh month of pregnancy. She is addicted to cocaine, which she has been using throughout the pregnancy. She has been informed of the potential side effects of her cocaine use on the fetus, which are likely to result in an infant who will require more attention than that given to infants born to a nonaddicted mothers. She adamantly states that she will keep the baby and figure out what to do about her addiction after it’s born. You personally feel that the young woman should place the baby for adaption or at least in foster care until she can solve her own problems. What is the ethical thing to do? The student will prepare a 2 typed paper* to apply knowledge of human behavior, a theoretical perspective (found in Highlight 1.9 “The Kohlberg Theory”), and the NASW Code of Ethics to scenario 1, outlining an ethical course of action the student would choose.
