• The term “Bleeding Kansas” refers to a lengthy period of violence between pro- and anti-slavery forces that occurred in Kansas from 1856-65.

  After the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, thousands of Northerners and Southerners came to the newly created Kansas Territory. Some of the new arrivals just wanted access to the new lands available for settlement. However, many other people came to cast their votes either for or against slavery.
