The research essay is worth 25% of your final grade, and must be submitted by midnight, November 23rd, through Canvas. It is designed to let you demonstrate your skills in writing and in independent research while building on what you have learned from the course materials and the lectures. The research essay should be approximately 1750 words in length (1500 minimum and 2000 maximum), and should make use of at least three books and three articles, or the equivalent. While your essay should reflect your study of the lectures and course materials, it will be built around a single work of art which you have chosen for yourself. A wide range of art produced in Italy from 1300 to 1550 will do, and some art outside of Italy from after 1500 will qualify as well. If you have any doubts about the suitability of your choice, please consult the instructor.
The object of the research paper is simple: explain why the work of art you have chosen is relevant to one of the major issues of Renaissance society — normally this will be one of the topics listed in the source review guidelines. Through a detailed discussion of the art itself, supported by references to lectures and course materials, you will prove that the work of art you have chosen in relevant to the course theme you have identified.
Your research essay will build on your source review and paper proposal in the sense that you may freely borrow from the earlier assignment in working on the last one. You can write about the same work of art that you chose for your source review, and you can revise the opening of your proposal to serve as the opening of your essay. You must document all the references in your essay with footnotes or endnotes. With written sources, use page numbers, with paintings refer to page or slide numbers, and with music supply a url and a time stamp. The Chicago Manual of Style is recommended but not required for the formatting of citations.
GRADING RUBRIC: Like all essay-format answers, you answer will be graded in part on how clear, coherent, and convincing it seems. In addition to this, I will grade your answer for this specific assignment against the following checklist:
1) Does the essay have a clear, focused thesis explaining how the source addresses one of the themes of Renaissance society?
2) Does the essay have a clear, focused thesis statement that can be found at the end of either the first or second paragraph?
3) Does the essay make a convincing use of primary and secondary materials to demonstrate the thesis?
4) Is the essay clearly and efficiently written, with no superfluous words, sentences, or paragraphs?
