1) Observation Activity at the Lab School (scenes of child development)

 

For this assignment, you will be an observer in the pre-school classroom at the lab school.  Please note that you must maintain all Covid 19 protocols as required by CC as you do your observation. Please keep your mask on all the time and maintain your distance from other people.

Your first ethnographic observation should be based on 2separate 2-hour observations (total 4 hours and 2 visits) at that preschool. You should focus on observation and avoid texting, talking on the phone or otherwise distracting yourself from your primary purpose of observation. Maintain detailed field notes for each observation session. Use the following guidelines for your field notes

Your field notes should include both descriptive information and reflection.

Descriptive information includes your attempt to accurately document factual data [e.g., date and time], settings, actions, behaviors, and conversations you observe. Use the following as a guide for your notes. This description should be written in essay form.

Date, time, and place of observation

Specific facts, numbers, details of what happens in the classroom

Sensory impressions: sights, sounds, textures, smells, tastes

Maps and visuals of the scene

Describe the physical setting.

Describe the social environment and the way in which participants interacted within the setting. This may include(choose 3 themes) patterns of play, recess, literacy, development, selfhood and identity, attachment, teacher-child interactions, metacognition, peer-interaction, language and cognitive development, socioemotional development, gender, race, sexuality, interactions, frequency of interactions, direction of communication patterns [including non-verbal communication], and decision-making patterns or other.

Describe the participants and their roles in the setting

Describe, as best you can, the meaning of what was observed from the perspectives of the participants. Specific words, phrases, summaries of conversations, and insider language

Record exact quotes or close approximations of comments that relate directly to the purpose of the study.

Describe any impact you might have had on the situation you observed.

2) Reflective/Interpretive Section(what do observations about child development mean to you) 

In your interpretation and reflection, please make sure that you make meaningful links to at least 3 to 4 concepts or key ideas/theories from 4-5 different readings from class. Required connections: Draw on Creswell’s explanation of the ethnographic and spotlight what makes your study anethnography 

Linking your observations to readings cannot be superficial and it should serve as critical dimension of your ethnography. 

You should provide a meaningful and elaborate analysis of how your ethnography is connected to the readings.
