Written Work: You will be expected to use correct spelling in all written work. Use of appropriate grammatical skills in oral and written communication is also very important. Throughout the course you will expand your personal vocabulary through the study of terms related to the course. Your written work will be evaluated on both content and mechanics. Good writing should be reasonably free of mistakes and without composition errors, which are called gross errors (sentence fragments, run-on sentences, subjectverb disagreement, misspelled words, and typographical errors that result in such errors). All of your work MUST BE TYPED (using no more that 12-point type, with margins not exceeding 1 inch on the top, right, and bottom and 1.5 inches on the left) and double-spacedunless otherwise indicated by the instructor. You may submit written assignments using either APA or MLA style guidelines according to the style preferred by your major.

Journal Entries: Journal entries are used as tools for student reflection. By consciously thinking about and comparing issues, life experiences, and course readings, students are better able to understand links between theory and practice and to generate justifiable, well-supported opinions. This kind of writing assignment is meant to be interactive, as students engage with ideas and experiences that bring about questions, comparisons, insights, criticisms, speculations, and tentative conclusions. Although somewhat less formal than essays, journal entries should still construct a coherent narrative, use complete sentences, be grammatically correct, and be scholarly in tone.  The assignment is for 2-4 pages following the procedures below.

Purpose: To monitor your own interpersonal behavior and to relate it to the concepts, terms, and ideas learned from involvement in this course.

Introduction: You will focus on your own communication. As you look at it and analyze it, make frequent references to the concepts, terms, and ideas learned to help explain the causes and effects of the behavior. (The journal will be evaluated in terms of your ability to apply the concepts of communications to your behavior. Both depth and detail in the description of behavior is expected. In addition, specificity in using the concepts and principles to explain the behavior will be examined. Accuracy of analysis is essential.)

  1. Part 1 of each entry will be description. Please date each entry accurately. Use hour of day, day of week, plus calendar information to make it specific. Then, briefly describe the people involved, the location, and the nature of the interpersonal transaction. Be specific.
  2. Part 2 of each entry will be explanation. Using the concepts, terms, and ideas developed in this course (in both class and readings), explain the behavior that you described. Whereas description simply describes when, where, and what happened, explanation goes into why and how it happened.
  3. Part 3 of each entry will be evaluation. This is the most important section of each entry because in this section we assess effectiveness. The essential question here is What works? and What works most effectively? If it worked, why did it work? When something works and works well, we want not only to be able to repeat the success but to know why it was successful. It helps when we face similar situations in the future. If you did what you did again, what would you do differently? This also gets at effectiveness.

There is an example attached to the page. Just come up with something that may have happend on a weekend out or something similar. avoid family as she knows about them from previous lab reports.
