You are the curator of the newly opened la petite Galerie de Grands Miracles, centrally located in the arts and gallery row district on Beverly Boulevard in Beverly Hills, CA and sister gallery to the prestigious and world renown la Galerie du Monde located in Paris.  You have just returned from New York with the owner of the gallery.  With your expert knowledge, discerning eye, and keen intuition, you have assisted the owner in acquiring a collection of work which has received much publicity and excitement in the art collection world.  After treading though a heart racing and rigorous bidding process at Sotheby’s of New York, you have convinced the owner to splurge a cool $23.7 million dollars on what is sure to be dubbed “The acquisition of the century” in the next issue of Art World Today, which will also most likely feature you as “Curator of the Year” on the front cover.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch.  Much excitement is afoot.  The Governor in his second inaugural year, is faced with the overwhelming task of repairing California’s fiscal and economic woes.  It turns out that the Governor has a soft side and is very adamant about continuing to allocate public resources for the arts, in spite of the resounding mantras and pressure from his party comrades who insist that those funds be used elsewhere; a mal-alignment which fortuitously found its way to your doorstep.  The Governor’s assistant has contacted you to congratulate you on your recent acquisition and to request that you meet with the Governor to discuss his Arts Millennium Program.  The Governor has also requested that you act as special advisor to the program and plans to attend the opening night of the exhibit, where a brief press conference will ensue at the reception.  His “big” idea is to showcase the collection or art, with you as “special advisor” in an attempt to build a swell of support for his lackluster received Arts Millennium Program.

Over the next few weeks, you are about to embark on an experience that will propel you to the alabaster and marble halls of curatorial greatness or one the will banish you to poster child purgatory.

With this added pressure, you are planning launch maiden exhibit of the le Petit Gallerie des with your proud, and highly sought after, collection of lost works by the famous artist ____________________________________.  Not only must the exhibit uphold the

discriminating standards of the Gallerie des Mundo, it must also be a worthy vestibule to showcase the collection of work.  As you can see, your job three tiered and highly

complex.  In order to pull this off successfully, you must wear multiple hats…yeah it stinks! But it’s the price of praise and fame…oh yeah, and lots of money too.

As curator, one of your many responsibilities is to assist in the promotion of the gallery by facilitating the creation of marketing material which will announce new acquisitions, future exhibits, and special engagements, such as the one brooding above head and tormenting you in your dreams.

Your first task is to create a series of images based on the art of ____________________  ____________________________________.  This will be used as key art for many print and digital promotional material.  You will use your skills learned under the tutelage of your brilliant professors as well as your learned knowledge about the artist.  Due to the media coverage of the upcoming event, the owner has instructed you to create the following pieces:

  • Poster
  • Postcard Design
  • Web Banner

1. Poster should be designed using artwork from your chosen artist.  You must copy it using various methods practiced over this course.  You should aim to create a ‘real’ likeness of the original works of art over a more stylized representation and strive to achieve a final piece that is harmonious and consistent with the artist’s work.  The posters must be formatted as 11” x 17.”  Select portrait or landscape orientation that best fits the original artwork.

2. The postcard is 4” x 6” and it too may use artwork developed on other pieces. (only one side is needed.)

3. The web banner ad will be used to market the event on selected art-related websites.  Consider a simpler, less cluttered version of the print banner, as the size will be set at 800 pixels wide by 150 pixels high.

Grading Criteria:

Heavy emphasis will be given on your ability to create a compelling marketing campaign with original artwork while maintaining the given hypothetical situation.

Ideas should be well thought out and executed with tact and skill which will ultimately serve to produce stimulating visual communicative pieces of work.  NO BORING WORK!  Your efforts must also reveal your ability to critically digest the problem statement as expressed in your oral presentation as well as your final illustrated designs. Attention will also be given to your agility and skill level using the software in aiding you to combine various effects, styles, shapes, patterns, type selections, and compositions.  Draw upon your knowledge of typeface design, layout and alignment methods, color theory, design principles and elements. And finally, your work must “belong” together, in other words, create a gestalt body of work – not disjointed and awkward.

You will be expected to give a professional presentation of your work on the due date.  Time of the presentation will be announced. No late projects!  This will be a true test for all of you.  Good luck and good designing.
