Student essays should begin by identifying each work’s research question, central argument, and methodology. (For methodology, think about what sources and author uses, and the way they use them. For example, if the author uses newspapers, do they do a deep reading of five representative articles, or a statistical analysis of hundreds of articles?) From there, essays should advance a systematic comparison of the two pieces. Be sure to choose articles that advance differing perspectives and/or use different methodologies, since an essay arguing "these two authors say exactly the same thing, in the same way" won’t be interesting to write or to read.
