For this blog post, I’m asking you to go deeper into the topic of race and surveillance. You have a short reading by Andrew Ferguson on big data policing (attached below), which is an area of technology growth getting a lot of attention in recent years. 

First, listen to this interview (Link is below.) Ferguson did with the Cato Institute. 

Then, find a related article in another news outlet that provides another point of view on how police are using new surveillance technologies. Make sure you include a link/citation information for the article you find. 

In your blog post, here’s what you should include in your 500-750 word write-up:

1. Summarize your thoughts on how this technology is shaping up. What are your main concerns with this technology? Are there specific things from the Ferguson interview and/or the additional article you found that are particularly surprising/concerning for you? How do you see the current balance between benefits of predictive policing and drawbacks — especially for marginalized groups?
2. What are the questions that researchers and designers need to be focusing on to minimize bias when designing these kinds of technologies that have significant societal impacts (e.g., leading to arrests and jail time)?
3. What needs to change in police departments in the future to ensure that technology use is properly balanced with other data sources, as well as human inputs, so that algorithmic bias does not lead to unfair law enforcement practices for certain sectors of society?
