Purpose

Option 1: The prompt (topic) for the cause OR effect essay is turning points. When thinking about the causes of an important decision or event in life, one may discover that those causes are linked to effects that, in turn, lead to more causes and effects. This is similar to the plot of a story. 

Option 2: You may also choose to write an Informative Essay–this would mean you would simply choose a topic and inform your audience about some aspect of that topic. You may choose any topic. (Please note this is not a persuasive essay.)

Instructions

For this essay, choose either to write about the causes OR effects (not both) of a turning point in one’s life or choose a topic of some interest and share information about that topic.  Select one of the following topics:

Students should analyze the causes of an event that is experienced or observed, for example

• An achievement or success

• Attending college

• Relocating to a new neighborhood or city

• Changing careers or a job

Format Requirements

• Write 500–600 words, five paragraph minimum

• Follow standard MLA paper format requirements

• Include at least 3 sources (online websites are fine and 1 wikipedia is fine). 
• You should include a Works Cited page listing your 3 sources properly and include at least 2 in text citations in your essay.  These may be facts, quotes, or data that supports your ideas in your essay. (The lecture from this week includes a discussion on how to find and include appropriate material for any prompt offered above.)
