Read and analyze, pp. 52-107, of Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. Your analysis should focus on this section of the novel. Do not use examples or quotes that appear in other sections of the novel for this assignment. 

1. Summarize the plot  the events that occur in this section — in a few paragraphs. Keep your summary reasonably brief. Two double-spaced pages is a good length for your summary. Please do not exceed three pages! 
2. Discuss a  specific law or custom governing the behavior or treatment of enslaved people and/or other Black people  depicted in this section of the novel. What are the impacts of this law or custom on the physical and psychological well-being of Black people of the time? What, if any, are the impacts on white people of the time? Support your response with specifics from the book. 
3. Evaluate the character Rufus. To what extent is he a good guy? To what extent is he just a product of his time? Support your response with discussion of at least one specific example. 
4. Discuss the depiction of romantic and/or sexual relationships between people of different races in this section of the book. Consider how these relationships, their complications, and consequences are represented both in the 1800s and in the 1970s. Support your response with a specific example from this section of the book. 

5. What are the themes (the central idea or ideas) that are explored in this section of the novel? Remember, a theme is more than a topic (e.g. love, death, family, etc.). Think of a theme as a general observation or truth that is revealed about a topic, such as Love makes us behave irrationally. Briefly explain how each theme is realized (1-2 sentences per theme). 
6. Choose a significant quote. Copy and cite the quote. Explain what you think it means and why you think it is significant.
