The Problem

The problem with the new AT&T is that of assimilation. There are so many new facets to the entity that is now AT&T that integrating all of them together will prove problematic. Contributing to the problem of assimilation is the new leadership. While all these new leaders have extensive experience in their respective smaller fields, few, if any of them, have experience in such a large area of expertise.

            A second issue that AT&T is facing is the changing values of their customers and society. The way that video services are being currently disseminated is changing very quickly. Traditional television is almost gone from todays services. (Smith, 2015) Television and video streaming services appear to be heading towards an ala cart subscription service model. (Pegoraro, 2021) This allows the consumer to pick and choose the platforms they wish to view content upon as well as the specific channels they wish to watch. The traditional model of ordering a set package from the local cable company, including many, many channels that the consumer has no interest in and may never watch is no longer appealing to the public. All of this is occurring right at the time that AT&T has acquired some of the more traditional models of the last decades viewing models.

            A third issue that AT&T will be facing can be linked to the second problem. The competition that AT&T is facing will not be sitting around waiting for them to get their collective heads together and get settled. They will be smart enough to take this opportunity to surge forward while AT&T is still getting their feet underneath them. Taken in isolation, AT&T appears to be an innovative corporation, however, when looking at the bigger picture, they are responding to the changes in the competition. (Abril, 2019)

The Causes

            One of the major causes of the issues that AT&T faces is that of a changing medium in which they are peddling. The sheer speed that the medium of streaming services has entered out society, and at which they themselves are changing is a daunting enough task for any company to keep up with.

            A second cause of the issues that AT&T is facing is that of their current infrastructure. Though their days of simply being a telephone or a telecommunications company are long gone, they are still working with the technology and advancements of years past. Changing these systems over, especially while the new leadership is still learning them, may prove problematic.

Recommendations

            The first recommendation that I would make would be to overhaul the current systems of delivery and infrastructures. It behooves no one if the new leadership must learn an older or possible even outdated and antiquated system and then learn a new system that the company may move to. The need to move to a better, more consumer-friendly delivery system is apparent, as their competition may already be working in that direction.

            My second recommendation is a bit of a piggy-back off the first one. I would recommend that they look at the trends over the last few years and how other companies have taken their production and presentation of the products that the consumer wants and start working towards that direction. I would recommend that they use the past patterns to predict how the next pattern will emerge and start to work towards that path before their competitors do so.

            The third suggestion I would have would be to ensure that they have the infrastructure and devices in place to increase the consumers connectivity. Being able to connect with friends and family, entertainment, and business needs have exploded in the last few years, especially amongst the restrictions and lock downs of the Covid 19 pandemic. (Feiner, 2021) Being able to offer the consumer better, and more varied choices will entice them to seek out the services that the new AT&T is offering through their many, many subsidiaries.

Conclusion

            AT&T is on a new path. They are headed into territory in which they may have tread on similar paths before, but this time it is a larger, more traveled road with uncertain destinations at the end. But with determination, grit, and some luck, they can reach their desired goals. It will not be easy, but lets be honest, nothing worth achieving is ever easy.
