Instructions:
Select a topic of your choice (relevant to this class, related to some of the topics we examined this semester) and based on that topic, select and evaluate 4-5 of the data sources/sites that we reviewed during the course (see weekly content) that pertain to your topic. You should be able to extract some data to analyze and present from each of your selected sources that pertains to your topic of choice. Taken together, what are the major strengths of the existing data (how is it beneficial or how does it contribute to your topic of choice?) that is gathered and presented on these sources/sites? Conversely, what can be done to enrich this data (i.e., what is missing or disorganized, is it easily accessible, etc)? Provide an example of how you could utilize this data to affect or enact public policy related to your topic of choice. For example, changes to corrections, enacting new drug/alcohol abuse policies, juvenile counseling, neighborhood crime prevention, etc.
Come up with your own policy in an area of your interest using the data from these sites. Explain your reasoning for selecting the data, and how you would use it to effectively guide your policy. You only need to focus on one (1) policy (or policy area), but all of your selected sources should have data that pertains to your area of focus.
Make sure you extract some data from your selected sources, and provide some analysis of the data in order to show how it can be applied to the policy (present the data and your analysis). Also, strengths and weaknesses shouldn’t be the sole focus of the paper. It needs to be there, but the focus should be pulling some data, and showing how it can be used to guide your chosen policy.
A note about the 4-5 sources: I want your sources to consist of various databases. If you would like to use research articles, try not to include more than 2. For example, you could find 2 research articles from the UTC databases that are applicable to your policy, but also use data from the BJS and UCR (or other sources like TbI, ILJ,SCPS, BLS, OJJDP, NSCS, CSP, NAYC, NSDUH).
