SRR’s – SRR stands for “summary – response – reflection.” It is a writing exercise that fulfills several purposes:

• It is similar to an annotated bibliography
• It is a type of note-taking
• It is a type of artificial memory (a record of what one learned)
• It is an opportunity to find out what you think (learning)
• It is a pre-writing activity (pre-writing ? writing ? rewriting)

Summary section: This should be a summary of the reading material, with a focus on something you would like to highlight. The tone should be objective, academic, and logical. It should not include opinion, analysis, or evaluation of the piece.

Response section: This section conveys a personal response/reaction to the piece you read. Include gut feelings, thoughts, and contextual information about your experience. This is where you express your take on the value of the content, being brutally honest if need be. If you found it boring, you can say that here. The tone of this part is more like a journal, and not an academic essay. (Response is an evaluation).

Reflection section: The reflective section serves as your conclusion, but also takes a deeper look at some aspect of the chapter. Reflect on one thing that seemed quite important from the chapter. You may analyze a passage or argument from the text, compare a key concept to something else, evaluate the piece in a more logical way than the “response” section, or offer some kind of “synthesis” of different texts. (Reflection section should draw on the skills of analysis, synthesis, and/or evaluation).
