Overview
Your preparation for and active participation in our on-line discussions is vital to the learning
process. Our online discussions will provide a forum for additional exploration of course concepts
and ideas. These questions are intended to increase your knowledge and application of the
subject matter while giving you the opportunity to get to know some of the other students in the
course.
Effective discussion posts move the conversation forward and may include offering new and
unique insights, clarifying issues and complexities, reframing and extending ideas in meaningful
ways, and offering a perspective that helps the group integrate and synthesize readings, ideas,
and topics. Debate and dialogue are part of the process, but always within the realm of respect
and care. Vigorous discussions will provide the basis for this journey and your classmates will be
your companions.
For each discussion board you will be graded out of a total of 100 possible points. Any references
cited must follow the rules detailed in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association, 7th Edition (no specific # of references are required; use them if you need them). For
each discussion board question, you must post a minimum of 3 times: this includes an original
answer and at least two replies to classmates that meet the length guidelines below. I prefer you
post your replies to classmates to different people (i.e. one reply to John and one reply to Jane
rather than two replies to John). These 3 posts, which also meet the length guidelines, are
required to earn any credit. Incomplete discussion boards and discussion boards that do not
meet the minimum length requirements will earn “0’s.”
If you have questions about your grade for a particular discussion board you must contact me
within 7 days of your grade posting. You will need to explain to me, based on your submitted
work as contrasted with the specifications outlined in this rubric, why you believe your work should
be graded differently.
Write your original answer to each discussion board question in about 300+ words.
Write your two replies to classmates for each discussion board question in about 200+ words.
Protocol
Posts (whether they be original answers or replies to classmates) should add value to the
discussion and help move it forward. There are a variety of ways to do this, including (note: this is
not an exhaustive list):

Offering new and unique insights
Clarifying issues and complexities
Reframing and extending ideas in meaningful ways
Offering a perspective that helps the group integrate and synthesize readings, ideas, and topics
Pulling in related information from other sources – books, articles, websites, other courses, etc.
Providing concrete examples, perhaps from your own experience or from industry
Describing possible consequences or implications
Challenging something that has been posted in the discussion – e.g. playing “devil’s advocate”
Suggesting a different perspective or interpretation
Posing clarifying questions
Your discussion score for a given week will be based on the timeliness and quality of messages
you post to that week’s discussion based on the following scale:
The timeliness of your discussion posts matter! (you need a minimum of 3 posts)
• Postings should be well distributed during the week
• Ideally, you’ll make one post per day across three or more days
• However, making your three posts across two days is acceptable
• Making all three posts on the same day is strongly discouraged
The quality of your original answer matters! (1 post should be an original answer – 300+ words)
• Post should demonstrate clear evidence of critical thinking
• there should be clarity of argument
• there should be depth of insight
• there should be originality
• there should be relevance
• post should contribute significantly to the discussion
The quality of your replies to your classmates matter! (2 posts should be replies to classmates 200+ words each)
• Posts should move the discussion forward
• replies that identify important relationships add value
• replies that offer a fresh perspective or critique of a point add value
• replies that offer supporting evidence for their position by pulling in information from other
sources (e.g. books, articles, websites, other courses, etc.) add value
• there are a variety of other ways to do this as well…
Avoid postings that are limited to “I agree” or “great idea”, etc. If you agree (or disagree) with a
posting, then say why you agree (or disagree) by supporting your statement with concepts from
our course readings, outside articles, or by bringing in a related example based on personal
experience or one that exists in industry.
Address the questions as much as possible (don’t let the discussion stray).
Use proper netiquette (proper language, typing, etc.).
