Professional Development for Strategic ManagersThis task is about looking to the future. Where do you want to be in a year’s time? What about two year’s time? Do you see yourself developing your role in your current job? Do you see yourself in a different job?The final part of this Task is to list the skills that will be useful to you and help you to achieve the goals that you have set out above. Look at the lists of skills in the Study Pack, but also think about others that might be needed. If some of the skills will be more important than others you should point this out.Task 2This section needs a detailed and honest assessment of your own strengths and weaknesses in the skill areas listed in Task 1. If you complete this section carefully it will become a model that you can use throughout your career to assess your development as manager.Think carefully about what each skill really means; the assignment points out that meeting deadlines is not evidence of time management. Delegating work is not evidence of real delegation. Getting your own way is not evidence of negotiating skills or leadership.Task 3This section can be linked to Task 1, as well as to your day to day work. Think of it as explaining your strengths and weaknesses to yourself. Try to be objective, as if you were examining someone else’s management strengths and weaknesses.Task 4When completing the Honey and Mumford Learning Styles test, work through the questions as quickly as possible; mark down your first response to eh questions without thinking about them too deeply. Draw your results on the chart as shown in the study pack in order to clearly show your results.Task 5Your development plan should be about changes in yourself that you are seeking to achieve, not just practical achievements such as “finish my qualification by July”. You might finish projects at work or achieve qualifications, but still not have developed yourself in the key management skills.The changes do need to be specified in a way that they can have a course of action to be taken in order to achieve them, and be able to be evaluated so that you can assess whether you have made progress.
