Why can an IT governance archetype be good for one type of IS decision, but not for another?

Businesses have many models to choose from that will fit and keep it running. The types of governance for the IT realm vary from the six different archetypes. Some will benefit, other will suffer. In IS decision making under IT governance, an IT Monarchy that gives IT the power to make IT decisions, a Federal archetype where corporate makes the decisions and brings IT to make their decisions and voices heard, and an IT Duopoly where a group of IT individuals come together with Business Unit (BU) Leaders and make IT decisions.

These types of governance allow IT to be involved and not decided upon by inexperienced executives or managers. Other archetypes do not benefit IT. In a Business Monarchy, managers make the decisions. In a Feudal system, each BU of the organization will make up their own IT-related decisions, thus shutting IT out of the decision making process. Anarchy, decisions are made by individuals in an organization which can hinder IT decision making.

IT governance creates a framework for integrating business and IT strategies.

Organizations can produce quantifiable results toward achieving their objectives and goals using a structured framework. Business monarchy, IT monarchy, federal: IT duopoly, feudal, and anarchy are some examples of governance archetypes. The base of IT governance is corporate and focus. IT governance’s primary objectives are ensuring that the enterprise’s IT

infrastructure aligns with its business objectives and that its IT investment and operating costs are justified and under control (Harguem, 2021) .

The main benefits of IT governance include improved decision-making, improved control over IT expenditures, improved alignment of IT with business goals, and improved

communication between business and IT (Curtis, 2020) . The principal risks of IT governance include the potential for IT decisions to be made without adequate input from the business and the potential for IT to be used to advance business goals that are not in the company’s best

interests.
