The APRN’s Effect on Women’s Health and the Use of Motivational Interviewing to Increase Knowledge around the Importance of Preventive Guidelines.

Watch the video about Motivational Interview of a woman who is pregnant and continuing to drink alcohol.

Motivational Interviewing: Discussing Alcohol Use in Pregnancy

Consider what you learned from the video, along with other content that has been discussed in this course. For your initial post, choose ONE of the three scenarios presented below and answer the following questions. (Please include at least three scholarly sources within your initial post):

– As an APRN, how could you positively affect the health of the woman in the scenario you chose?

– What would be the pros and cons of utilizing the technique of Motivational Interviewing with the woman in the scenario.

– Trial the techniques you have read about over the previous few weeks related to Motivational Interviewing with a coworker, family or friend. What was this experience like? Do you see benefits to becoming more comfortable with this technique? Why or why not? (Please, answer YES, and explain why?)

Note: Choose only ONE topic/scenario.

1. A 34-year-old female who is 36 weeks pregnant – G2P1AB0 – presents to your office complaining of shortness of breath and ankle swelling. She states she has had “the flu” for several days and is insistent that this is why she can’t stop coughing. She is obviously short of breath when talking. In reviewing her chart, you can see she has a history of hypertension. She states she “”officially” stopped her blood pressure medications when she found out she was pregnant but admits that she rarely took her pills anyway, so “no big deal.”

2. Sumar has just found out she is pregnant and presents to the local free clinic. She is a 26-year-old G2P0AB1, and her first OB appointment is in two weeks. Sumar thinks she is about 12 to 14 weeks pregnant. She has come to the clinic complaining of indigestion. You notice the strong smell of cigarette smoke, and she admits she smokes one pack of cigarettes a day but states she is smoking less now since she started vaping.

3. You are seeing a 19-year-old female for STI screening. When reviewing her health and sexual history to determine her risk, she indicates she has had several new partners over the past six months and that she has not been using condoms but does have an IUD. She has started smoking marijuana and has dabbled with some other prescription medications over the previous two months. She is worried about having contracted an STI because she has noticed some “cauliflower” type bumps “down there” and would like to be tested.

This is a TPAL terminology for a better understanding of the above scenarios.

G = Gravida (number of pregnancies)

P = Para (Number of births after 20 weeks)

AB = Abortions

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) play an essential role in improving women’s health outcomes, and the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an effective strategy to increase knowledge around the importance of preventive guidelines. In this essay, I will discuss the role of APRNs in improving women’s health outcomes, the benefits of Motivational Interviewing in enhancing knowledge regarding preventive guidelines for women’s health, and the impact of APRNs’
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have the potential to improve women’s health outcomes in a number of ways. According to Alegria and Louis (2002), APRNs are able to provide comprehensive primary care to women, including preventive care, health promotion, and management of chronic health conditions. APRNs also have the skills and knowledge to provide education to women about how to improve their health, as well as the ability to provide psychosocial support to women. In addition, APRNs can collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure that women’s health needs are met. For example, APRNs can refer women to specialists for further evaluation and treatment when necessary. As such, APRNs play a pivotal role in providing comprehensive, quality care to women and promoting their health and wellbeing.
Motivational interviewing (MI) has been found to be an effective way to enhance knowledge and promote preventive healthcare guidelines for women’s health (Price et al., 2012). MI is a patient-centered approach that focuses on the individual’s values and strengths and is used to help guide the patient towards making health-promoting decisions. In a study conducted by Price et al. (2012), the authors found that MI was effective at improving knowledge about preventive care guidelines for women’s health. Specifically, the study found that participants who received MI had higher scores on preventive care knowledge than those who did not receive MI. Furthermore, the study found that MI was particularly effective at increasing knowledge about breast cancer and cervical cancer preventive care guidelines. This finding suggests that MI is a useful tool for healthcare providers to use when educating women about preventive care guidelines. Ultimately, MI is an effective approach to enhance knowledge and promote preventive healthcare guidelines for women’s health.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) can play a vital role in improving women’s health outcomes through the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a counseling approach that focuses on helping individuals recognize and resolve ambivalence about behavior change (Garcia & Luque, 2018). APRNs can use MI to help women identify their health goals, explore the pros and cons of their current health behaviors, and develop strategies for improving their health outcomes. In a study conducted by Johnson (2019), APRNs who used MI had a positive impact on women’s health outcomes. Johnson found that the use of MI by APRNs was associated with an increase in health-promoting behaviors and a decrease in health risks among women in the study. These results demonstrate the potential of APRNs to use MI to help women improve their health outcomes. Furthermore, the use of MI by APRNs can help to reduce healthcare disparities among women by providing a patient-centered approach to health care that is tailored to the individual needs of women. Ultimately, the use of MI by APRNs has the potential to improve the health outcomes of women and reduce health disparities among them.
The use of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in healthcare has had a positive effect on women’s health. Women have a unique set of needs when it comes to healthcare that only trained practitioners are capable of meeting. Motivational interviewing is an important technique for working with patients from all backgrounds in order to gain compliance when it comes to preventive health guidelines. By utilizing this approach, the APRN can not only encourage women to take a proactive approach to their own health, but also provide knowledge and resources for further education in terms of preventive health directives. Ultimately, education, proactive health care, and effective communication are three of the most powerful steps a healthcare provider can take in order to protect women’s health.
