You are conversing with your family or friends and they are curious about your course in architectural history and want to learn more about it. They ask you about the emergence of two building types that they frequently see in the city. One of them is the skyscraper or high rise and the other one is the residential building. Explain to them these two building types by using the following questions as a guiding aid. This means that you will articulate answers in complete sentences in a paragraph (essay format) for each building type.
1-High rises (25 points, approx. 400 words): Explain how high rises emerged, why, and how did they transform the city. You can use the following questions to guide you:
a-Which technologies, materials, structural elements, and workers enabled the building of the skyscrapers in the late 19th century?
b-Why did they decide to build high rises in the crowded cities (space limitations, powerful image, work efficiency etc.)?
c-Finally, comment on how do high rises effect the cities, its nature, history, and people’s experiences? (Think about the Seagram Building, CCTV Headquarters etc.)
2-Residential design (25 points, approx. 400 words): Explain the development in residential design (single houses or apartment blocks). You can use the following questions to guide you:
a-What did Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier (five points of architecture) etc. introduce as new housing styles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that transformed the design of traditional villas or houses? b- How did residential architecture and planning lead to segregation?
c- Finally, comment on why social housing represented by the Pruitt-Igoe Housing failed and why was it demolished?
