You do NOT have to answer all of the above questions. Depending on your pandemic narrative, you can focus on any one or more of these questions, and you can also modify any of them.   

The following guidelines may help you organize and develop your essay about 1,000-1,200 words:

Introduction:

• Briefly introduce a) the COVID-19 pandemic story you chose to discuss in your essay and b) its significance.
• Briefly introduce any or all three of Arthur Frank’s illness narrative types and put forth a thesis statement about whether or not Frank’s narrative type(s) are useful for your understanding of the actions, thoughts and/or experiences of the main characters of your pandemic story. If so, how applicable are Frank’s illness narrative type(s) to your story? If not, do you need to modify any of Frank’s illness narrative definitions, or to create new narrative types in order to help you better understand your pandemic story?
• Please note that you do NOT have to discuss all three of Frank’s illness narrative types: restitution, chaos, and quest. You can focus on any one or two of his narrative types if you think that is appropriate to your pandemic story. This is your intellectual decision.

Two to three body paragraphs:

• Each body paragraph should closely analyze certain details of your story to ILLUSTRATE how applicable Frank’s illness narrative type(s) are to them.
• If you need to modify Frank’s illness narrative types or create new narrative types, you should closely analyze certain details of your story to ILLUSTRATE how you apply your modified and/or new narrative types to them.
• Quote or paraphrase Frank’s narrative type(s) when discussing their applicability to certain details of your story or when discussing how you modify them.

Conclusion:

• Readdress the thesis statement in light of your discussion of the applicability of Frank’s illness narrative type(s) to your story in the previous paragraphs.
• What insights have you gained in thinking about Frank’s illness narrative type(s) and your pandemic story?
• If you have modified Frank’s illness narrative definition(s) and/or created new pandemic narrative types, what insights have you gained?
