Comparative analysis

For your next major assignment, you will examine how two authors treat a common theme or question in their respective works. For instance, you might compare or contrast how two authors present aspects of gender, class, race, age, sexual orientation, religion, political history, intellectual history, etc. in their writings. Your comparative analysis will use academic research to help you make an argument. This paper will be at least 5 pages and should use at least 3 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources.

The Process of Developing your Argument:

Begin with a question, a hypothesis, or even just a hunch. Then, do the necessary research to either answer your question or prove your hypothesis.

1. You need to choose two authors to work with, authors whose writing you find particularly memorable, disturbing, or problematic. What have you read that has left you asking questions? If you would like to continue working with an author you’ve already written about earlier this semester, you may do so.

2. You need to do research and read about your chosen authors, texts, and/or their historical and social contexts. If you would like to continue using research materials you worked with earlier this semester, you may do so.

3. As you conduct research, you can begin to develop your argument and figure out your thesis.

4. You should remember what you learned about developing arguments in the critical analysis and literary analysis assignments. Who is your audience? How can they be persuaded? What kind of supporting evidence do you need in order to convince them? Etc.

5. Write.
