The research paper will be a total of 5 pages minimum.  The research paper should be formatted according to APA 7th edition standards (but I have made some modifications and special requests so be sure to read these instructions carefully) with the exception of the title page.  If you choose to use a pre-made template, yes they are available, you will need to make adjustments and and/remove to adjust formatting to account for the special requests I have made to the format.  Also, because you are not doing original research using experimental design, you will NOT have an abstract page (delete this).  You also should NOT have any images, figures, diagrams, charts, tables, graphs, etc. in your research paper.  The following breaks down what each page of your research paper should entail…

Page #1 – Title/Cover Page (** Should NOT be in APA format, but in special requested format – see instructions below)

Page #2 – #4 – Body of Paper (includes the following sections & headers in order: Introduction, Pathogenesis, Symptoms, Treatments & Cures)

Page #5 – Reference Page

In accordance with APA, the research paper MUST be typed in size 12 Times New Roman or Arial font using black ink with 1 inch margins. DO NOT use any other font styles, sizes, or fancy formats anywhere in your paper! The following section headers should appear within your research paper in the following order and centered above the respective paragraph(s) of information: Introduction, Pathogenesis, Symptoms, Treatments & Cures. Below you will find detailed information about what to include in each of the sections of your paper.  (The sections should flow in a consecutive manner, you should not have each section on separate pages.)

TITLE PAGE: The title page will be the only page NOT formatted according to APA guidelines.  Instead, I would like the title page to be formatted as follows: a running head located on the top line, a descriptive title centered on the page, and in the bottom right-hand corner of the page (right-justified) your name, the due date, the class period, and the instructor’s name.

BODY OF PAPER & CONTENT: The body of your paper must include an introduction and information on the pathogenesis, symptoms, and treatments/cures of the disease/condition. These categories should appear as headers in your paper in the following order and include the information requested.

• Introduction – The introduction of your paper needs to begin by describing the disease and/or condition being investigated.  To accomplish this you should develop background information summarizing the disease/condition by discussing a history of the disease/condition along with statistics on prevalence.  This would be a good place to talk about any interesting “stories” or epidemiology.
• Pathogenesis – This section of your paper should include the etiology of the disease/condition, but more importantly, the pathogenesis of the disease/condition.  This means you should be giving a detailed and thorough explanation of the how, when, where, and why the condition causes infection.  This section should explain the biochemistry of the mechanism of how this pathogen causes disease.  This means you should be discussing virulence factors and life cycles (viral, host, etc).  THIS SHOULD BE THE BULK OF YOUR PAPER – IF YOU DO IT RIGHT, THIS SECTION WILL BE AT LEAST 1 PAGE LONG!
• Symptoms – This section of your paper should include specific and non-specific symptoms associated with the disease/condition.  This should not be a list, but rather an explanation of the symptoms including when and why they appear (this should tie back to your pathogenesis section).
• Treatments & Cures – This section of your paper should include discussion of all the possible prevention (i.e. vaccines), treatments (i.e. medications) of the disease/condition including supportive treatments for alleviating symptoms (i.e. medications (Tylenol), ORT, cold compress, humidifiers, lotions, etc).

REFERENCE PAGE: The reference page should be the final page of your paper and should be a list of all resources you used to write your paper.  The reference page should be formatted according to APA 7th edition guidelines.  All references listed on this page should appear in alphabetical order according to the author’s last name (or agency) with hanging indentions.  All references listed should be credible sources that are cited within your paper at least one time.  All citations within the body of your paper should also follow APA 7th edition guidelines.  All references cited in the paper should appear on the reference page.  NO IN-TEXT CITATIONS = PLAGIARISM!!Plagiarism will be rewarded with a grade of “0.”
