In the colonial period, there was no United States of America. Instead, the people who we now think of as colonial Americans, or early Americans, or founding fathers all thought of themselves as someone else: as British citizens, Virginians, and so forth. In this first assignment, you have the opportunity to explore these earlier identities, both for their own sake and to see how they relate to the emerging American identity.

Select a primary text from this period (any of the letters, sermons, speeches, or public documents actually written during the American colonial period).

Write a 700- to 1,050-word essay analyzing your chosen text. Include the following:

• Identify the genre of your chosen text.
• Explain how the author or authors of your text use the standard elements of this genre.
• Apply the “I Care” system described in Analyzing Rhetoric to your text.
• Explain how the author addressed rhetorical barriers and used rhetorical advantages in this work. (These concepts are discussed in Ch. 3 of Analyzing Rhetoric.)
• Explain how and where your chosen work appeals to a larger identity, and how this shapes the work. (For example, is this work written by a European to a European audience? By a British citizen to a British audience? By an American to a British audience?) Be specific about what elements of the work indicate these identities, and how they shape the work.

Note. No outside research is required, but you may add any that if you wish. You may add other primary sources from the period, or secondary/academic sources for perspective.
