Define and defend your position on the distribution of wealth in the US.

  1. Define and defend your position on the distribution of wealth in the US.  Be sure to cite scholarly articles on both sides of this debate and respond to the strongest arguments against your own position. If you wish, you may critique the films on wealth inequality as a starting point. This is obviously a highly controversial question so be certain to include citations counter to your thesis and respond to the strongest arguments against your position.
  • Page Length: As a general guide-line think roughly 4-6 double-spaced pages (not counting title page and bibliography).
  • Number of Citations: A minimum of four sources is required.
  • Sources from Multiple Sides of the IssueMost (but not all) of the questions address a controversial policy question. When addressing a controversial question make sure that at least two of the 4+ citations take a position counter to your thesis.   In fact, the very first thing I will check in grading your essay is the extent to which you meet this requirement.
  • Quality of Citations Use the highest quality of sources available for your topic; i.e. Primary and Secondary sources. Primary sources would include things like laws, executive orders, supreme court decisions and data not analyzed by anyone else. Secondary sources consist of the analysis of an expert on that particular topic – not a journalist or a blogger or textbook. If you need to use tertiary sources, look for the highest quality’ tertiary sources you can find.
  •  Cite BOTH at the end of the paper in a bibliography AND throughout the text. Be very careful not to plagiarize.  When you get an idea from someone else (which most of us do) you want to be sure to give credit for that idea by citing them in the text. And don’t just simply copy or slightly modify their words – put it in your own words.  If you fail to do so; if you plagiarize, you risk getting an F on that exam. Consult Dr. Rogers or someone at the writing lab if you have a question about this.
  •  Form of Citation – I don’t care whether you use MLA, Chicago, APA or make-up your own. But include all information as found in these citation formd
  • Critical Thinking: If you are addressing a controversial policy question it is absolutely imperative that you acknowledge and respond to the strongest arguments counter to your thesis. This is the single most important tip I can give.  It will drastically affect your grade if you don’t.
  • Stick to your precise question you are addressing; Be careful of going off on tangents. Think of your thesis as your answer to the question and the body of the essay as your arguments in support of that thesis. Note -the strongest arguments always shoot down the arguments on the other side
