With the causal analysis (1,000 – 1,500 words), you will be establishing the underlying reason why a problem has occurred as well as determining how it can be solved and even prevented.  To prepare for this assignment, we will watch a video on the 1948 killer smog in Donora, PA.  Watching this video will encourage us to delve into the impact of geography, poor air quality, and decision making by government and business.   You will use stasis theory (fact, definition, value, policy) and the “five whys,” a method to track down the underlying cause of a problem.  You may choose to examine contemporary situations that are comparable to the killer smog in Donora such as air pollution in Southern California, Ulan Bator, Beijing, and Tehran or indoor air pollution.  I have included a number of sources in this folder, but I encourage you to find others via Raptor Search.  We will follow APA citation. The paper is worth 150 points.

The paper will follow the following format:

Introduction (introduces problem – why should reader care?  Defines problem.  Why is this problem worth solving?  introduces approach)  This will be concise and straightforward.

Review of Literature (background of problem; possible causes or consequences; what does your reader need to know to understand the problem and its causes?)

Review of Causes (consider historical, social, and other factors.  This provides more specific background that allows you to make the recommendations in the next section.)

Recommendations (given the causes or consequences, what should be done?  Who should do it?  What is necessary? — this section is optional.  Don’t let this section take over the paper.  Be sure to spend time on the review of literature and the review of causes.)
