SET-UP: Despite considerable evidence that eating disorders and obesity are issues affecting nearly all cultures and peoples, the popular perspective on these issues is that they are limited to a few groups. As we have seen with other health conditions, there are powerful beliefs, myths and stereotypes around gender and race/ethnicity and social class entwined with eating disorders and obesity. Since myths thrive when they are unexamined, here we will discuss some of the myths in our culture regarding eating, eating disorders and obesity.

TO DO/POST:

2) With this material in mind POST/COMMENT a reaction to the material you have read/listen to/watched AND briefly describe a belief about eating disorders or obesity held by people from your culture. Commonly held beliefs include who can have an eating disorders (and who cannot); values concerning body size and what sizes/types are appropriate or acceptable; what constitutes problematic eating; and what are acceptable or appropriate treatments for eating problems.
