In your own words, please define “diversity” and explain the different ways that you have demonstrated a commitment to multiculturalism in your own life? (500 words maximum)

Diversity in my vocabulary is to have an understanding that not everyone in this world is the same as yourself rather they have different lifestyles, foods, cultures, and races that make each one of us unique in different ways. As a Korean American, I pride myself on having my cultures mix and make the person that I am today. I was born in the Republic of Korea and my parents decided to move to the United States in a small town called Folsom, CA when I was only 5 years old. When I moved to Folsom the population was mostly Caucasians. It was difficult in the beginning to fit in with the other kids since there were not a lot of Korean Americans at our school yet at all any Asians. As time went on, I slowly got closer to the kids at school and when I was accepted by the group slowly there was a growth in diversity where a lot of other kids with different backgrounds started to join our school. I remember that every time I would meet new students it would give me flashbacks to the days where I was once alone in a new environment with students that weren’t really similar to me. It gave me an idea of how difficult it was to fit in with the crowd so I would try to help them as much as I can to help them make friends. I was so grateful that Folsom High School students were very accepting of other cultures and had a mindset that they could learn new things from new people whether it would be the new food, new customs, or new games. It was great to see how our community as a whole accepts other ethnicities or other people with different backgrounds.
