“Demonstration” speech or “How-To” something

Selecting a Topic

This speech is also known as a “Demonstration” speech or “How-To” something. There are millions of topics that fall into this category. You could make something, repair something, or it could be something like, “How to . . . become a millionaire.” Usually if your topic completes the statement, “How to . . .” then it is suitable. As long as you can use visual aids, your topic should be fine for this speech.
Be creative in your choice.

Common choices in the past have been scrap-booking, washing/waxing a car, giving a baby a bath, and applying make-up. I prefer other topics because I have seen and heard so many of the common choices.
This is a great speech if you have a hobby or interest that involves creating something. You are not limited to making something, as you can also demonstrate how to do something, such as play tennis, draw a picture, or cut hair. I want you to be creative with your topic selection.
I suggest that you select a topic that you really enjoy. Students always do better if they enjoy what they are demonstrating. Perhaps there is something pertaining to your major that you could apply to this speech? For example, if you are in the health care field, you might consider doing CPR, or if you are a culinary major, you might want to decorate a cake.
Remember, if you hit a brick wall, using the brainstorming technique will help you with your topic selection.
