Essay 1:

The condition of being unable to stop using or doing something as a habit, especially something harmful – Oxford Dictionary. Just like a drug addiction or an alcoholic addiction, technology addicts know the harmful effects of excess screen time, yet they just cant help it. Unlike other addictions, technology is inevitable and is incredibly difficult to just simply avoid. However, through the use of proper technological boundaries, technology addiction could possibly be avoided.

The detrimental effects of technology have been rigorously studied in recent times. Many logical conclusions have been made regarding what technology can potentially do to the human brain. Most notably, technology has decreased our attention span.  A 2015 Microsoft study shows that the human attention span has severely decreased from a staggering average of 12 seconds in the year 2000 to 8 seconds in 2013. Unsurprisingly, there was a strong correlation between social media usage and attention span where individuals who used social media for long periods of time had a much shorter attention span. Therefore, the evidence clearly shows that technology has impaired our ability to focus which clearly has a detrimental effect on our day-to-day lives.

Depression and anxiety have been closely linked to the use of electronic devices, research from the University of Pittsburgh have found strong correlations between rates of depression and anxiety among young adults who engage in many different social media platforms. This actively demonstrates the adverse effects of the overuse of electronic devices and social media which has an overall negative impact on the mental well-being of its users.

More startling is that execssive use of technology has also been linked to suicide rates. Teens who spend three hours a day or more on electronic devices are 35 percent more likely to have a risk factor for suicide – Jean M. Twenge in Has The Smarthpone Destroyed A Generation. The statistic clearly demonizes the use of electronic devices, almost going as far as labelling it to be a silent killer amongst teens.

Unrestrained technology use amongst teens and young adults has also been proven to handicap certain skills that would have otherwise been acquired. Adolences is a key time for developing social skills; as teens spend less time with their friends face-to-face, they have fewer opportunities to practice them. Within the article, Twenge also explains that maturity amongst the iGen has stretched much further because of how a lot of the maturing activities; such as going out, dating, personal finance and overall independence; are postponed to much later into adulthood due to restrictions from parents which the teens dont even mind because they dont need to go out anyways. They can just do all that socializing locally within the comfort of their bed.

Technology addiction is also very similar to any types of addictions. Abusing social media and technology releases dopamine in our brain(citation). Dopamine is a feel-good chemical that the brain frequently releases occasionally with proper reason. Identical to any other addiction such as drug or alcohol, the abuse of technology releases dopamine as well which makes it that much more difficult for addicts to regulate or stop their addictions. Addicts are fully aware that the overuse of tech is undeniably unproductive and harmful for their health yet persist to do so because they just cant help it. Therefore, it would be wise to treat technological addiction with the same seriousness as other types of addiction

Technology addiction is also theorized to a coping mechanism that some use when experiencing psychological difficulties as noted by researchers from the London School of Economics in 2012. The research study notes that children who are psychologically vulnerable are more likely to engage in excessive internet use to cope with offline problems. It also argues that technological addiction might be a symptom of a broader problem present within the addict. Much of this theory of what technology addiction is congruent to other addictions in such a way that certain addicts are addicted as a way of distracting them from a psychologically heavy problem that is too overwhelming for them to handle, therefore, they resort to their addictions as escapes or distractions.

What sets technological addiction apart from other types of addiction is that technological addiction is inevitable. Unlike alcohol which can easily be removed from ones diet, technology can not. It is already very deeply ingrained within society which makes it all the more difficult for technology addicts to just drop technology from their daily lives without finding themselves back to using it again. It is simply extremely difficult, if not impossible to live without technology.

With that being said, how can we cure or avoid technology addiction?

In 2010, Nick Bilton, a New York Times reporter got the chance to interview Steve Jobs – whom at the time was the CEO of Apple. It is revealed that Steve Jobs forbids his kids from owning Apples new tablet at the time, the Ipad. Jobs also made it a point on having dinner at the big long table in their kitchen discussing books and history and a variety of other things. The pattern also persists for the CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates who puts a screen time cap for his 10-year-old daughter such that she doesnt get too addicted to a particular video game. Gates also forbids his daughter from ever owning a phone until she was 14, 4 years later than the average child.

What the 2 evidences suggest is that even the creators of the addictive technology we now see today understand the potential harmful effects such technology has. Therefore, as society it would be wise to take a page from the actions and habits these inventors have enforced to their household and follow suit. We could create a much better, healthier and tech-friendly environment with the people around us which limits the use of technology in certain time periods. We could also set strict technological boundaries such that we dont allow technology to consume the very essence of our lives. All these measures might be necessary to avoid technology addiction and create a much more social and humane community for everyone to live in.

Ultimately, technology addiction is still a relatively new type of addiction that has only recently been diagnosed which means that it is still within debate amongst psychologists.  Needless to say, the detrimental effects of technology abuse is clear and shouldnt be undermined. We also mustnt forget that unlike other addictions like alcohol and drugs, technology is inescapable which makes it more important for us to take a step back and re-evaluate our own technological use and question if its over-excessive.

Essay 2:

The Myths of Progress on the Tech Frontier

Technology addiction refers to the inability of people to stop using the technological devices that exist in the world today. For example, it is difficult for us to get off from a smartphone. The book “irresistible” by adam alter, says whether it is material addiction or behavioral addiction to smartphones, the basic characteristics of addiction are the same. For many people, the smartphone is like an extension of the body, like an extra organ, always fixed in the hand. The first thing you do when you wake up is to look at the phone, and the last thing before going to bed is to look at the phone. This behavior is often referred to as addiction. Everyone in the online network is not real. They don’t want to use their own name so their behavior will not be constrained as they are usually facing to face. Any word they say on the Internet may cause a great impact on a person’s mental health and affect people’s self-worth. We should prevent online extremism and hatred from continuing to develop because we should not use social media to spread hatred. Social media companies should take more action against policy violations, make their policies public, and resist extremism and hatred. Social media companies should improve and stop allowing them to spread hate speech on the platform.

The spreading of online hatred is because of the good environment that is provided by social media. Internet is a medium for people to widespread hatred. It is easy for people to use hashtags for organizing. This made it easier for people to promote their hatred through different media. According to the article Twitter and White Supremacy, A Love Story, the author states that For white supremacists that want to make sport out of harassing people of color, Twitter is a target rich environment(Daniels 580). This shows that it is easy for white supremacists to influence their culture and target a lot of people of color.  This helps the white supremacist a new way to spread propaganda and there is almost no vicious harassment of accountability system. Is there any response from social media to the growth of online extremism? In the article Twitter and White Supremacy, A Love Story, Jessie mentions that   If it wanted to, Twitter could specifically monitor the (((echoes))) symbol, and shut down accounts that were using it. Twitter could also make the term searchable. But it has done neither(Daniels 585). It can be seen that Twitter has not taken any actual actions such as searching for symbols and closing the accounts that use them. This is why hate speech on the Internet cannot be stopped. This helps the white supremacist a new way to spread propaganda and there is almost no vicious harassment of accountability system. This gives an initial stage of the internet, as a place where they can connect with other white supremacists around the world.

Social media is like a platform to function a culture through the online world. It is true that social media did try to control online hatred but did not give enough effort to accomplish this. In the article Twitter and White Supremacy, A Love Story, Jessie also brings up The companys sporadic, impartial effort to systematically deal with white supremacists (and other harassers, including Trump) is revealing(Daniels 590). This passage explains that Twitter is taking little to no responsibility in dealing with widespread white supremacists and other social problems that are happening in today’s modern society moreover it is said that the company is prioritizing driving traffic over social issues such as racism, hatred, and sexism. It gives the white supremacists an opportunity to get more connection and support from the online internet. The media is a resource for white supremacists to more platforms to spread their idea. What is the most ridiculous thing is that these social media are aware of the problems they cause, but they choose to turn a blind eye to what it is causing to individuals and society. Like Jessie said, “white supremacists love Twitter because it loves them back” (Daniels 590). Human nature is fragile in the face of interests because they can ignore everything for the sake of profit. This is the terrible nature of social media companies.

It is important to control online extremism and hatred because the online world is not necessarily real, but it undoubtedly causes a lot of harm to people and society. Regardless of whether the information is true or not, he has a great possibility to influence other people’s thoughts because it is very easy to shape other people. Many platforms are already standing on public, so the government and social media companies are regulating them. In the article Social Media and Online Speech: How Should Countries Regulate Tech Giants? the author states that They bar posts that glorify or encourage violence; posts that are sexually explicit; and posts that contain hate speech, which they define as attacking a person for their race, gender, or sexual orientation, among other characteristics(Siripurapu and Merrow). It analysis that Social media companies have adopted restrictions on inappropriate posts, which shows that they are working hard to restrict violent speech. Although social media has poorly controlled hate speech behavior, the government has given another explanation. Social media platforms have largely been left to make and enforce their own policies, though Washington is weighing new laws and regulations(Siripurapu and Merrow).  This shows that laws and regulations have been difficult to intervene in the formulation of social platforms at this moment. For example, Twitter will serve public interest accounts, just like former US President Trump. Although he posts a lot of abusive content, they will not stop it. Some people will say that social media companies should not restrict the Internet and set rules. But in my opinion, this is ridiculous because they say it so easily, but they have not experienced online abuse or violence. It is important for us to stop online hatred. To put it another way, people are becoming more and more dissatisfied and unable to deal with themselves. For people who are increasingly impetuous, the Internet is the best voice platform. These curses and hatred have become a catharsis for netizens.

There was no internet before. We might write our thoughts in a notebook or tell people around us, or we might just imagine it in our minds. Now that the Internet is convenient and the cost of releasing emotions is the lowest, there are more and more irresponsible curses on the Internet. These include hatred. The need for the expression of negative emotions and the convenience of the Internet makes the Internet a low-cost channel for negative emotions. Social media companies should take action to control and delete that unethical online language that can affect individuals and the entire society. Just like what Yuval Noah Harari says from the The Future of Humanity Talkshow try to prevent the worst possibilities from being realised(Harari). What we should do is to control these bad speeches and prevent the better development of extremists. This world has never lacked overwhelming kindness, but only rational thinking and restrained behavior. If we dont speak out to resist online hatred and extremism, no one will speak for us when we are caught in a cyber attack in the future.
