Situational Assertiveness and : Practical Application and Reflection

Part A: Situational Assertiveness (4 marks)

a) Consider examples of when you have been passive or aggressive (one example of each). Both examples should be in work or professional situations and with adults. If you find it difficult to find two work examples, one may be a personal example (say with family members) but both situations must be with adults. Briefly describe in boxes below (Column 2).

b) Explain why you respond this way. Make reference to course content (e.g. self esteem, emotional expression, learned behaviour, etc.). Briefly describe in boxes below (Column 3)

**NOTE: Passive-Aggressive is a third method of ineffective non-assertiveness which you may use if you choose

Part B: Practical Application and Reflection (12 marks)

In Part B, you will describe using a new assertiveness technique based on what you wrote in Part A. Select either the AGGRESSIVE or the PASSIVE situation in Part A.

FOUR ASSERTIVENESS TECHNIQUES:
BROKEN RECORD, FOGGING, NEGATIVE ASSERTION, & NEGATIVE INQUIRY

Situation (AGGRESSIVE or PASSIVE) (12 marks)

Choose one of the situations above in Part A where you were AGGRESSIVE or PASSIVE. Select one of the assertiveness techniques discussed in class content (listed above) – broken record, fogging, negative assertion & negative inquiry.

a) Identify and explain the assertiveness technique you have selected. Why have you chosen this technique, why do you think this specific technique will work in this situation?

b) Provide a brief overview of the situation and the people involved.

c) Now write out a script of you having a dialogue with the person using this new assertiveness technique. Make sure your script clearly and accurately demonstrates the use of the technique. You must highlight where in the dialogue/script you have used the appropriate language using the assertiveness technique. The technique should clearly be used more than once. Your script must also show evidence of active listening as well as an I-statement. The outcome should be very clear (win-win situation) and is a result of the correct use of the assertion technique.

d) Reflect on how effective you think using this assertive method could have been in this situation.

Remember to provide enough detail to show your understanding of course concepts (e.g. use course specific language, reference course material when referring to specific concepts)

(Max Part B: 2 pages).

PART C: Personal Impact of Assertiveness (4 marks)

Identify two goals that you will focus on next semester to enhance these skills.

1. Assertiveness Techniques: MY GOAL IS _________________

2. Dealing with conflict: MY GOAL IS ______________________

To develop your goals, consider what you have learned about being more assertive or about dealing with conflict. Consider how learning more about assertiveness techniques and dealing with conflict will enhance your communication and relationships with others.

You must make specific reference to course content (self esteem, perception, emotions, assertiveness techniques, etc).
