Each student is responsible for writing a 5-6 page (not counting title and reference pages) research-based paper that focuses on: gaining a better understanding of a marginalized population that leads to greater cultural humility; applying social work practice skills to working with that chosen population; and identifying interventions that do or could be used when working with this population. The culture/population you choose must different from your own primary culture. Some populations students have chosen in the past include: pagans, Jehovah Witnesses, elderly veterans, atheists, people with disabilities (e.g. wheelchair user), transgender teenagers, First Nations tribe, and Amish people.  Because you will use the information gathered for this paper to create a "client" to play in your recorded role-play, this population must be in the later teens to elder age group (no children).

The main areas that will be covered in this paper include: 1) Describe some of the main characteristics of the population from a strength-based perspective; 2) Describe the mechanisms in American society that cause or reinforce discrimination and/or oppression (past and present) of this population. Describe attitudes and stereotypes (current and historical) of the dominant culture toward the population and the impact of these attitudes on the population (psychological, physical, political, economic, social, etc.); 3) Identify knowledge and skills regarding relationship building, assessment, planning, action, evaluation and/or termination (the planned change process) that are necessary to become diversity competent; and 4)  It must also discuss in detail at least one diversity competent direct intervention, and one diversity competent indirect intervention specific to this population.  At least 4 scholarly sources are required for this assignment, 3 of which must be from professional journals. Webpages do not meet the requirement for scholarly sources. Your paper must adhere to correct 7th Edition APA form and style
