Prompt: The relationship between India and Pakistan can be described as œrocky.   They have been engaged in a conflict

Prompt:

The relationship between India and Pakistan can be described as “rocky.”   They have been engaged in a conflict over the territory of Kashmir, dating back to 1947, and which is still going on today.

Since 1947, the conflict has sparked several wars, several cease-fires, and several peace-talks.  Outside institutions and outside states have played (or at least attempted to play a role in these conflicts) and in the periods of peace as well.   There have also been periods of peace and attempts to fix bilateral relationships on other levels (such as trade talks in the mid-2010s).  Yet relations continue to be rocky.  Why?

Your job is to analyze: why India and Pakistan’s conflict over Kashmir still continues today.  You should do so from the realist, liberal, and constructivist perspectives we have discussed in class.  In other words (1) how would a realist explain why this conflict still lasts today; (2) how would liberal explain it, and (3) how would a constructivist explain it?  In answering these questions, make sure to clearly connect the case to the concepts that we have discussed in class.

Appropriate resources for gathering information on the conflict include news resources and historical books on the topic, if you so choose.

Note: You do not have to capture EVERY aspect of this relationship.  That would be a book, not a short essay!  And indeed, realism, liberalism and constructivism are likely to focus on only certain aspects of this situation.  Find important events and information to help back up a realist, liberal, and constructivist account of why the conflict still carries on today.

Your essay should be about 5 pages, double-spaced (not including the title page and references).  You should have about 1-2 pages for each of the 3 perspective’s analysis.

Any method of citation is fine, as long as you make sure to USE citations.
