PART A
Use the course materials to answer the question Is Islamophobia anti-Muslim racism? Your answer can be yes, no, or both yes and no, as long as it is well-supported by the course readings. Choose three readings to analyze.
- Shoot for four paragraphs, one short one stating what you will argue and whose work youll use to do it, and three others, each one analyzing one of your chosen readings and why you found that scholars argument regarding racism convincing. Alternatively, you can contrast the views presented by the scholars, and then state which one you found more convincing.
PART B
Choose a recent incident of Islamophobia (something public in the media, or something you personally experienced) and analyze it using one of the concepts we read in the course materials, such as Werbners folk devils, Arjanas Muslim monsters, or Saids Orientalism. There are other options, and you should feel free to use any analytical concept you found useful for understanding Islamophobia as more than just negative stereotypes about Muslims.
- Shoot for two or three paragraphs, the first one describing the incident and explaining which scholars concept youll be using, and the second and perhaps third analyzing the incident using that concept.
For example:
Paragraph 1
On September 8, 2021, politician X made the statement to news outlet X that, Muslims.. Fully describe the incident. While this statement stereotypes Muslims and is obviously discriminatory, it also reveals the legacy of deep and enduring images of Muslims as monsters. Using the work of Sophia Rose Arjana, I will show how the concept of Muslim monsters can help us to understand the..
Paragraph 2
In the book, Muslims in the Western Imagination, Sophia Rose Arjana argues that.On page X, she states, ..
