  • First, locate a news story that, in some way, overlooks key aspects of sociological knowledge about the type of deviance covered during the week(s) this assignment is due. For example, for Blog #1 (Weeks 6-8), we will cover different types of crime and for Blog #2 (Week 13), we will address cyber technology and deviance.
  • Next, you will develop a blog that critiques and reframes the story using sociological research and theory, making a case for why it’s so important to consider the sociological perspective in the first place.
  • Title your blog in a way that is both descriptive and gets your reader’s attention, e.g., “Journalist Fails to Consider Structural Issues Related to Cyberbullying Victimization among Teenagers and Young Adults.”
  • The body of your blog should include (1) the title of the article you will be critiquing and (2) the link to the article.
  • Following this, include some sort of picture that will help spark your reader’s interest. Please make sure that the picture is an appropriate size for the blog. The picture should be relevant to the article you are critiquing and/or your discussion about the article. Below are two links that explain how to add an image to your blog.

You can embed an image directly from Canvas or Flickr (link 1) or you can copy and paste an image directly into your post (link 2).

Then, your blog should include the following (please use the headings in bold):

  • Summary: In 2-3 paragraphs, summarize the article’s main thesis, findings, and points in your own words. You should not rely on direct quotations from the article.  I know what the article says; I want to read your interpretation of the article.
  • Sociological Critique: In 3-4 paragraphs, this is where you will share your knowledge about social deviance by critiquing the article from a sociological perspective. For example, thinking like a sociologist, what did the article miss or overlook?  Why and in what ways was the article flawed?  How could it be improved?  It is important that you draw from course material by incorporating key concepts, ideas, and/or theories.  In this section of the blog, you are reframing the story using sociological research and/or theory.  Additionally, this section should incorporate in-text citations from various material covered throughout the course (e.g., specific textbook chapters, power point lectures, videos, and/or additional readings).  This section of the blog is your opportunity to demonstrate that you can successfully apply course material and use the sociological imagination to critically examine an article about deviant social behavior.
  • References: List your references (preferably using ASA or APA formatting). Please keep in mind that you should be referencing course material. We will cover a lot of material in this course, so you do not need to cite material from outside of the course. Additionally, you do not need to list the article you critiqued as a reference since you will be providing a link to the article at the top of your blog.
