Each of you have been writing about a theme all semester. Now I would like you to take three of the art works you wrote about this semester and form them into a comparison and contrast paper. It should be about five pages long double spaced.
-The paper should have an introduction, a thesis statement, and conclusion as well as however many paragraphs you need.
-Somewhere in the paper you need to describe why you chose those objects to compare- and it needs to be more than that you like them/are interested in them. That can be true, but what else is there? Is it that you want to compare gender/politics before and after the conquest? or compare styles of architecture?
-For each art work you need to tell me the culture or artist that created it, the title (whether assigned by art historians or the artist), material, geographical area and rough dates (this can be century).
I’ll be grading on quality of writing, whether you follow the above instructions, your accuracy in describing the art objects, and grammar and punctuation.
For writing, I want you to create a compelling argument that it makes sense to group these objects together. Your argument can be that they are totally different and have nothing in common, but if so do it well.
Things to think about to compare/contrast: material (stone, pottery), subject (religious figures, portrait of a ruler), purpose (propaganda, religious center), style (figural, abstract). There are many more but this is to get you started.
You are welcome to cite sources outside of the class lectures and books but if you do so please cite the using the Chicago manual of style (https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html (Links to an external site.)) or another professional citation guide like MLA.
If you have questions about writing you can make an appointment with the writing center to go over it. They are super helpful and happy to answer questions about anything relating to writing. https://gatewayct.edu/Writing-Center
