After reading Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu, write an essay of 3-5 pages about the geography-related lessons you draw from the book.

The book is about a friendship between two religious leaders whose influence has extended far beyond the adherents of their respective religions, to include many people who are not necessarily religious at all. The book operates largely in the realms of personal development, mental health, and philosophy.

But the two men at the center of this book have been deeply shaped by the places from which they have come, and they have in turn influenced those places profoundly. Each of them, in fact, has a complicated relationship with his homeland.

You can find many different kinds of geography-related lessons in this book. In fact, I am counting on it. I expect to read something different from each student, and this makes my life more interesting.

Since this class is a geography introduction, though, I am going to suggest some of the directions those lessons might take you in your writing. This is not a list of things to address, but rather some possible ways you might approach this eassy.

In no particular order:

Does the Nijman text help you to understand some aspects of the book that you might not have understood previously?
Are there some parts of the Nijman text that you understand more fully because of the book?
If you could meet the Dalai Lama, what would you ask him about Tibet?
If you could meet Desmond Tutu, what would you ask him about South Africa?
What influence has each man had on the problems confronted in his home country?
