Choose one of the two essay prompts provided under each number and answer each in 350 or soword essays (if you need more space that is fine, just don’t go crazy. The total word count of the entire final exam, excluding the bonus question, should be no more than 4000 words and no less than 1050). You may combine questions into a single essay if you think it is appropriate. If so, make sure to hit the word count for the combined essays. If you do combine questions, you must still answer one question from each number, so you cannot use this as a strategy to skip questions. Please label each essay and give a word count beneath each one. Your grade will be based upon the rubric provided in the syllabus (appropriate citations, clarity of argument, etc.). See syllabus or ask me for further information.

***You must use the texts as evidence to get full credit, don’t just give me my own lectures back on paper.

1. A: Choose one of the value theories discussed in class and explain why you think it is a good foundation for ethical theory. Explain some of its critiques and how you might respond.

2. A: Choose one of the major three ethical theories and apply it to a real or imagined scenario. Describe in detail how it helps guide behavior and how one would arrive at that conclusion.

B: Which of the three major ethical theories do you find to be most compelling? Why? Explain in detail why you think it is better than the other two.

3. A: Explain why ethical relativism fails to adequately explain ethical disagreement. Explain the argument(s) for why we should reject it.

B: Why is good a sovereign concept according to Murdoch? What is her basic argument in the paper? Explain in detail.

BONUS:

What can Augustine’s story about the theft of the pears tell us about human nature? Does this provide a problem for ethical theory? Why or why not? Explain in detail.
