Later in the term, you will read from the novel, The Marrow Thieves, and record your thoughts in relation with the novel in a journal-type format. These representations can take any form: textual (reflection, poem, blog, etc.), oral (ie. a voice recording or song), visual (drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, etc.), or digital (iMovie, Prezi, Vimeo, Flipgrid, etc.). If you decide to do an artistic response, you will need to include an explanation of your piece also.

If you choose to write an essay, the page length would be 6-8 pages not including title page or reference pages. If you choose an artistic representation, you must provide a 3 page explanation of your piece/the connections you have made.

Remember to use APA referencing when using direct quotes as well as paraphrasing information you have gotten from readings/videos etc.

As you are reading each section of the novel, you will decide what themes or ideas you would like to respond to in writing, orally, or artistically. After you read the assigned section, complete your initial response. This response should make two kinds of connections (from Adamson & Kopetsky, 2008):

1.     Text to self: make connection between the chapters in The Marrow Thieves and your own personal experiences, thoughts, or feelings. It is not expected that there will be direct parallels. Its a space to share what you think about what youre reading and connections you can make to whats happening in the world around you today.

2.     Text to text: make connections between the main message(s) in the chapters in The Marrow Thieves and other texts. You should make connections to the course materials, readings in other courses, and/or other texts youve read and viewed in your personal lives.

These need to be done before each corresponding weeks class date. You will engage in discussions in a) Zoom break-out rooms with your forum group members (Week 12) and b) your weekly forum post (Week 11 and 13). These discussions will help you make further connections and develop your ideas more thoroughly. After the discussions, you will add to your initial response, making the third connection:

3.     Text to others: refine your thinking through sharing perspectives and standpoints, understanding the perspectives and standpoints of others, revising and refining perspectives. (Note: if you have chosen to respond artistically you do not need to change your artwork, but might make this connection in the form of a written or oral explanation).

You will then hand in your final assignment containing your responses to the three different sections of the novel.
