Film review of the 1997 movie TROPICAL MALADY

The first part of the assignment involves engaging on 1-2 of Arnika Fuhrmann’s theories /concepts which I will include below. In about one page explain what they mean in your own words ( do not just quote directly) then draw examples from the movie to make connections and the second part/page of the essay should be the actual film review, some potential questions you might be asked to address include:

What is the theme and message of the film? Is the queer theme implicitly or explicitly expressed? How and why does the director convey the message and the themes in certain ways? What literary and visual designs including the narrative, perspective, mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound, protagonist , setting and etc. are employed to support the messages? How have the scholars studied the film similarly or differently from your views? How does the film broaden your understanding of the subject of study? These specific questions should also be answered : 1) Detail all the religious or spiritual instances in the film. Drawing concepts from Fuhrmann’s reading and see if you can correspond these film instances to any of Fuhrmann’s theories or concepts. ( Think about how and why queerness is tied to spirituality.)
