Summary:
Two Parts to Assignment—
1) Paper– 25 points
2) Presentation– 10 points
PART ONE:
Your research paper will be between 5-7 pages and typed in MLA (formatting, in-text documentation, and works cited page). You should plan to include at least 5 outside sources in your paper. It is likely that you will look through many sources, but you are only required to use 5 in your actual paper. Your sources should abide by the following: Any amount from the DCCC library catalog, any amount from the online databases (ProQuest, CQResearcher, Academic Source Premier, Newspaper Source Plus, etc.), limit to TWO credible Internet sources.
Your research paper topic should be a subject that forms an issue. The topic’s issue should have at least two sides. Think of yourself as an investigator entering into an already debated issue.
Your main rhetorical purpose is to INFORM. You will write in an informative style until the last paragraph.
Your goal with this research paper is to:
1) Clearly state your topic and the issues associated with the topic
2) Give any necessary background information (context, definitions, etc.) to explain your topic and the on-going debate or issues
3) Clearly explain the opposing issues surrounding your topic (the “should and should not,” “the support for and support against,” etc.)
4) Develop a few paragraphs explaining the arguments for your topic’s issue
5) Develop a few paragraphs explaining the arguments against your topic’s issue
6) Have you found in your research any groups that offer compromises to the issue?
7) After conducting your research, your final paragraph will ask you to take a stand on the topic
Questions to consider:
What argument seems the strongest? Why?
“After researching both sides of the topic, it appears that ________________ makes the strong argument.”
Do you agree with what appears to be the strongest argument?
Did your opinions change on the topic after your research?
The organization of your paper should follow the above. You will need to form a clear thesis statement that acknowledges that your topic is a debated issue that has at least two sides.
You must write in the 3rd person voice until the last paragraph. In the last paragraph, you may write in the 1st person voice.
