Definition of Art

To recognize art, one needs to understand the meaning of art and its importance. Art is an expression of emotions hence expressing life itself. It is a creation that passes a certain interpretation. One can also define it as a human skill rather than a natural occurrence.  In this paper, various definitions of art are presented, and various images are explained to show why they are categorized as art.

When something is presented in particular construction, it is bizarre in its singular design. Through their construction, artists can pass their feelings and opinions. The value and importance of art to societies have persisted throughout generations (Langer, 08). The concepts they present may signify innovative ways of understanding societies around the world.

Art interpretation usually depends on an individual’s ideological views, experiences, associations, and culture. Each art has its definition; hence, art, in general, can be defined as love. Hence, art cannot be defined with perfection; it should open human emotions, thoughts, and capacities in its way (Langer, 10). It is a creation that allows the spectator to define it as they see it and an artist to represent it in whichever way they prefer, even if the observer does not view it the same way as the artist.

Art usually allows feelings and experiences to be recognized and understandable within the societies’ emotions and thoughts. It makes one ask what the artist thought when they designed the art (Langer, 05). An art usually makes the observer staring at it to obtain meaning for them.  Art usually has intentions suggesting that sometimes artists intend to get the observer to think and relate to the art (Langer, 04). The observer may also feel that the art is just an image with no meaning relating to them.

Various Illustrations of Art

This work can be defined as art because it signifies an imaginative blend of the two central colors; white and black. One can see that the artist has utilized several colors to express more than just figures and shapes in this work. An observer may interpret the work as a painting representing the multiple opportunities and possibilities possible in life. The black color may be representing death while all the other blend of colors representing life opportunities. The black color can represent death because, in the painting, it cuts through the white color in a dissolute impression, breaking the colorful combination of other colors, the same way death cuts off life opportunities.

The third work is also an art because of its designs. The image represents a garment threaded using over twenty-four different designs. An observer can interpret it as an art representing the many ways one can view a situation. The different designs can represent how people should not be biased in a certain situation or towards someone but perceive it in many different ways.

The fifth image also represents work that can be described as art. The fact that the image represents a bowl used to hold food or water makes it an art. It has an unusual holder, which may signify that it was used by leaders in a family of a community.  One can also define it as art because it has a boat-like shape, making it look streamlined, hence representing art.  The unusual handle on this bowl may represent human torsos. One can see that the bowl is barely decorated, but the surface is wholly embraced with roulette patterns that illuminate its normal shape making it an art.

The sixth image represents a painting of Jesus Christ being crucified on the cross hence making it an art. The painting draws the observer because it is different from the normal representations of Christ on the cross. This painting shows the body’s earthly burden because the head falls intensely forward, and the body sags to show how Jesus Christ was punished for people’s sins. At the same time, John and Mary, his parents, look down, weeping at the ends of the dead Jesus, confirming that it is an art. Besides, the painting is an art because of the representation of Jesus Christ as a simple man because the body hangs painfully, the loin-cloth is very basic, and the reality of both feet being nailed with one nail.

The seventh image can also be defined as art. The image represents a painting with many different designs and colors drawn on a wall. The image represents a uniquely painted garden that has different kinds of trees. Different fascinating birds play in the wild vegetation that thrives beyond a fence and flies over to the blue sky. The blue-like sky, on the other hand, has many colors that render an atmospheric impression. The garden also has different fauna and flora species represented in the precise specification. One can recognize some species among various trees, plants, and flowers, for example, oaks, cypresses, date palms, oleander, and strawberry trees. This painting may be representing a peaceful and conducive environment.

The eighth image can also be defined as art. It represents a black woman carrying around a white woman in her head like a barrel of water. This work can be said to represent slavery. The artist’s subject of slavery in this work is rendered to recall traditional African lifestyles in the United States as slaves of the whites. The painting draws and preserves significant African cultural heritage.
