The third of May 1808 painting was completed in 1814 by Francisco Goya. Also known as El tres de mayo de 1808 En madrid, this wall painting is not an historical commemorative, but a religious painting, oil on canvas. The painting commemorates the Spanish resistance to napoleon armies, which led to the peninsula war. This work of art was commissioned by the government of Spain. Goya requested funds to complete the painting making it one of the most potent pieces produced in the modern art of the 19th century. The picture’s contents represent the emotional aspect present during the war. The painting stands out because it deviates from the traditional and Christian arts to a modern art aspect. The work captured a revolutionary style which inspired several artists including a series by Edouard and Manet, Pablo Picasso’s Massacre in Korea and Guernica.

The valiant five memorials were completed in 2000. It is also called the famous five monuments. The famous five include Henrietta Muir Edwards, Irene Parlby, Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, and Louise McKinney. Emily Murphy passed an act called Women’s Protection act that would save her family from abandonment in case of dissolution. The act was passed in 1911 in Alberta. Emily was well Known and honored for her role as a judge and social welfare advocate. because for Murphy status she was called to many platforms, which she could not stand because of the governments deeming women not as “qualified persons” which was required for appointment to the senate. So this lead to the brilliant women listed above forming to fight the injustice of women. The five brought a case appealing to the 1982 decision. The supreme court had passed a bill denying women the right to vote, stating that they were unqualified. These women-led several movements that supported women’s rights.

For thousands of years, people have erected monuments to serve various needs in society. Monuments take on many different forms –large paintings or murals, sculptures, buildings, or other constructed edifices –but are often notable for the fact that they are erected in public spaces (e.g. outdoors), are in public view, and are commonly large in scale. Most often, monuments were created to honor noted individuals or commemorate key monuments in history, but oftentimes they may serve other purposes or additional/secondary functions. For example, throughout history, monuments were often used for propaganda, persuasion, politics and power; they could serve to highlight cultural heritage or promote ethnic identity; they reinforced group affiliation and/or personal identity; or could offer commentary on historical events. As with art in general, historical monuments were designed to communicate and convey ideas and perspectives to a given audience; but not everyone responds to art in the same way. Each one of us is informed by our own personal and cultural background, our life experiences and our sense of identity; art means different things to different people.
You have no doubt read about or seen on tv or the internet increasing tensions over the meaning and significance of controversial historical monuments, particularly in the United States. Currently there is a raging debate over what should be done about controversial or offensive monuments. Put rather simply, there are some who believe that such monuments should remain on display as they are part of our history, while others advocate for their removal as they are symbols of racism, segregation and slavery.
In the last week, you have created catalog entries on well-known commemorative monuments from the Renaissanceto the present day, located both abroad as well as here in the United States. These will be used to create a TimeMap, which will soon be made available to you. Using this as a resource to reflect on the history of commemorative monuments, you will now analyze one American monument, whose importanceand indeed future is currently being reassessed.
Assignmentspecifics:
Choose an American commemorative monument that has been deemed problematic and out of step with current American values(a good choice would be a Civil War monument or another historical statue that commemorates a historical figure whose actions and beliefs are
currently under scrutiny). You may choose the American monument you have already worked on and submitted in Part2 of this assignment or you may choose another one from our TimeMap timeline.
Writea 3-4page essaywhere you introduce your chosen monumentand present your ideas as to whether you believe it should be preserved in its original location, be removed, or altered in some manner.
Arrange your paper as follows:-
Introductory paragraphin which you present the essential facts of the monument: title/subject, artist/architect, date erected, and location. Discuss why the monument is garnering attention. Whyhas it been deemed offensive? Finish with your thesis statementin which you propose your opinion as to what should be done with the monument.-Body of paper: oDiscuss WHY it was erected; WHO erected it; and most importantly, WHAT the monument is meant to commemorate. oTake into accountas well, the date of the person /event being commemorated and the date when the monument was erected (was it soon after or someyears/decades later?). oDiscusshow this monument might shape our perceptionof the person based on how he/she is depicted (pose, style, artistic medium, size etc.). oReflect on how the tradition and nature of historical commemorative monuments (seen on our TimeMapper project) may affect how we unconsciously view such monuments without considering the actual merits of whether or not such individuals or events truly deserve to be venerated.oConsider how people of different backgrounds and ethnicities might view the monument differently? Why has your monument, like so many other markers that honor figures in politics, culture and science, been deemed offensive and racist?-Conclusion: Present your opinion on what should be done with your chosen monument. Should it remain in place, be removed, or is there some other option? Check out through Google how historical statues have been altered or repurposedin recent days. Support your decision by mentioning other monuments, either here in the US or abroad, either recently or some time ago, have similarly been reassessed in light of changing opinions and values.
