Course Description:

Welcome to the open course “Writing for Professional Journals.” The content of this course is open to the public and is licensed under Creative Commons. Patricia Gonce Morton, PhD, RN, FAAN, University of Utah College of Nursing Dean, authored the content as part of a grant provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) while participating in the RWJF Executive Nurse Fellow program. The “Writing for Professional Journals” course can be used by an individual learner or can be adapted in any way for a course in a college’s program of study. The course also may be helpful to practicing nurses in a professional development program. The course content includes twelve modules. Each module has accompanying video instruction, PowerPoint slides, reflection assignments, activity log workbook assignments, and suggested reading lists.

Objectives

This course will address the following and help learners:

  1. Describe the key steps in planning and writing a manuscript
  2. Analyze the steps in the process of writing and publishing in professional journals
  3. Engage in a topic of interest that has potential for publication
  4. Implement strategies to increase chances of acceptance of a manuscript for publication
  5. Describe how to respond to an editor’s decision about the manuscript
  6. Express a positive attitude toward publishing in professional journals

Assignment*:

Complete the modules 1-11 (Module 12 optional) and complete the assignments accompanying each module. Save the document with your last name and title of the assignment

Submit all the reflection assignments as one scanned document to Typhon

* Important: It is imperative that the student complete each module 1-11 in order and/or module 12. It is helpful if you have a writing mentor to look over your work. Someone with experience with writing for publications/ professional writing. The mentor does not need to be a nurse.

Make a course folder on your desktop, titled “Writing for Publication” and add all your course materials in that folder.

 

 

Instructions

Step 1:  Access the course: https://nursing.utah.edu/journalwriting/

 

Step 2: Select the course: page open to https://utah.instructure.com/courses/306223

 

 

Step 3: Click on the “Start Here” button on the bottom left. This will open the course and you will see the page below

Step 4: DOWNLOAD and save from the interactive course page the following:

  • Activity Log Workbook (for modules 1-11)
  • Activity Log Workbook (Module 12) for the Reviewing Manuscripts
  • Reflection Assignments
  • Course Resource list
  • Also DOWNLOAD- the accompanying PowerPoint Presentation – this will be located in the interactive Course Module One. (you will see the link when you open each Module). Follow the module instructions as you complete each module.

Step 6: Access the Modules form the menu on the left side of the page

  • View accompanying PowerPoint Slides, watch the videos (Be sure you have high-speed internet). Complete all assignments during each module using MS WORD or appropriate software. Save your work as you will submit all work at the end of the modules.
  • Be sure to title each modules assignment (reflection exercises) with your name and the number of the module.
  • Include the instructions for the assignment and complete the assignment. Submit all assignments as ONE scanned document for Modules 1-11 and/or Module 12 (if you complete one or both)
